Staff Environmental Scientist

Waterborne is a progressive company of bright, motivated scientists and engineers looking for a valuable addition to our team. We currently have an opening for an entry level Staff Environmental Scientist in our Champaign, IL office. The position ideally integrates field instrumentation, data collection, database management, spatial analysis, and modeling, including responsibilities for technical project and administrative tasks.

Position responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will have the opportunity to assist with data collection and entry
  • Provide technical support in the following areas: preparation for and collection of field site data, field instrumentation, and in-office data and equipment management activities, composing memos and standard operating procedures
  • Actively support a wide variety of projects, including the management of environmental monitoring databases for crop protection chemicals and consumer product ingredients
  • GIS/spatial analysis, database management, environmental modeling, standard statistical analyses, results generation and interpretation, presentations, and report writing
  • Self-motivated and possess a willingness to learn new technologies and skills with minimum oversight
  • Travel throughout the United States will be required and comprise 20-40%, as yearly average, seasonally dependent (during short periods, travel may comprise 50-70% of time)

Qualifications include:

  • Perform in an interdependent team setting to solve problems and make improvements to processes
  • Analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Working knowledge of, and experience with, databases (SQL Server, MS Access), programming (Visual Basic, JavaScript, Python), GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS), and analyzing data using statistical packages (Excel, R, SPSS) is a plus
  • Adept at querying for data, synthesize data into summaries and reports, presenting findings and report writing
  • Ability to perform thorough quality assurance check on work
  • Adept technical writing skills are a plus
  • Self-motivated and possess a willingness to learn new technologies and skills with minimum oversight
  • Professionalism, dependability; excellent communication skills, and resourcefulness with ability to meet client and project deadlines
  • Possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited science curriculum in Agricultural, Environmental, Agronomy, Ecology, Geography or related discipline; 1-2 years relevant job experience is a plus
  • Must hold a valid U.S. driver’s license and be capable of driving larger company vehicles (pickup trucks and cargo vans) – CDL not required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and withstand physical outdoor elements such as heat, cold, and adverse weather conditions associated with field studies
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand and power tools (drill, auger, chainsaw, weed trimmer)
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship
